  Madhyapur Thimi - as a town of Potters  


Terracotta Products

A Potter Making an earthenware Thimi is noted for terracotta. Clay utensils and sculptures made here are famous for their peculiarity in a wide range and also for durability. From small pots to gigantic pots are made in Thimi. Small pots are made on wheels while gigantic ones are first shaped on wheels and then make larger by beating with wooden hammer. After they are sunned, they are polished with Lancha (brown clay). They are then fired for three full days in traditional way and when fired in kiln, it is heated upto 700 - 740oc, If pot do not need to be glazed and 1000 - 1040oc, if pots are to be glazed, which is done for five to seven hours.

earthenwares being sunned Some famous earthernwares made in Thimi are-
small sized - Salincha, Palcha, Dhupaura, etc.
middle sized - Gompa, Dhampa, Bhegah, Jasi, Koncha, Athah, Gamala, Bhajan, etc.
large sized - Potasi, Tyapa, Agah, etc.

Kumhas are potters by caste. Inspite of harsh circulstances they bear in their work they seem to be happy in preserving traditional occupation. Though kumhas are spread in many parts of Thimi, more are in Chapacho. More than 60% inhibitant of chapacho are Kumhas.
