Madhyapur Thimi - Religions and Beliefs

Religions in Madhyapur Thimi
Kumar Idol Hinduism and Buddism are two main religions in Madhyapur Thimi, however, other religions, christianity for instance, are also practiced by some people.

Hinduism in Madhyapur Thimi
Hinduism can be divided into two main sects, viz Vaishnavism and Shaivism.

Vaisnavism is not a mere religious cult, but has a credible philosophic foundation. It is believed that Vashudeva Dharma, a sect of Vaisnavism, was first flourished in Mathura, India. Later, it had also spread in various parts of Nepal. The word Guror Vastudeva has been found inscribed in a Lichhavi inscription of Thimi. It shows that Vashudeva Dharma was flourished in fifth and sixth centuries in Thimi. However, due to lack of any other significances it can be assumed that Vashudeva Dharma no longer existed in Thimi after sixth century. Futher it is assumed that after that period worshiped of Krishna became popular.

Shaivism as a religion has persisted since the pre-historic time of the archaelogical finds of Harappa and Mohenjodaro. It has a continuous history of at least five thousand years. The oldest temple of Thimi is that of shiva's (Baka Chhen Mahadeva, Fourteenth century). Therefore, although we cannot know more about Shaivism in Thimi in Lichhavi period. We can say that Shaivism was widespread in Malla period in Thimi. Shiva is also worshiped in various forms such as Bhairab, Natyashovar and others.

Present hindu shrines and icons in Madhyapur Thimi are hardly countable.

Buddhism in Madhyapur Thimi
The spread of the teaching of Gautam Buddha began in this country over 2500 years ago. Buddhist Cheevas of Lichhavi period in Madhyapur Thimi shows that Buddhism was also practiced by people of Madhyapur Thimi at that period.

Bajrayana sect of Buddhism became popular during ninth to twelveth century. In this period, three teachers of Buddhism: Shantarksit, Karmashil and Padmasambhava had come to Nepal Mandala. Among them Padma Sambhava had stayed here for 4 years and went to tibet for teaching.

Padam Sambhava was born in 717 AD in Udyan and during his stay in Nepal Mandala between 743-747 AD, he had also stayed in Thimi. Stone carving of him is still in Gunakriti Mahabihar or Digu Baha of Thimi.

At present, there are 9 Buddhist courtyards in Thimi. A courtyard and a stupa were newly built in Nagadesh and Bode respectively. Beside these, there are more than hundred cheevas in Madhyapur Thimi.
